Coaches - Responsibility
A huge thanks for stepping up to coach this season, greatly appreciated! To help you hit the ground running, we’ve put together some useful resources for the season.
Please reach out to us if you have any questions - we’re here to help.
-
The Coaches Code of Conduct can be found on BABA's website.
Below are a few guidelines to help first time coaches:
Set goals at the start of the season as a group and as individuals and refer back to these goals during the season.
Keep it all fun.
Attention and praise to be placed on defence over offence.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Just because you’re a coach doesn’t mean you know all the answers. Use other coaches, referees, court coordinator. E.g. rules, game day, drills for training, dealing with challenging kids.
Discipline at training or game day
- Simply give three warnings then start taking 5 minutes of game time away from them.
- We are all volunteers and only get an hour training together each week and we don’t need 1 or 2 kids making it harder for us.
- If you require assistance to manage conflict with players or parents, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with Dave or Ronnie and they will deal with it confidentially.Get your team to gel as a team to work for each other as a group:
- Set an example with your behaviour to all officials, players and parents
- Be positive and don’t correct every mistake
- Even court time, encourage your team manager to take on this role.
- Constant encouragement.
- Don’t overthink it. Enjoy it!
- Being an encouraging unbiased strong leader will naturally bring improvement to your team.
-

Due to the large number of teams and the number of games this season, it will put a lot of pressure on the number of umpires BABA have.
We ask that you please always respect the referees and their decisions, even if you may not agree with a call.
BABA have LOTS of new umpires who are also learning and are constantly being supported by a senior umpire, and abuse towards ANY umpire will not be tolerated.
Please reiterate to all players and their parents in your team.
New Coaches
-
Focus on fundamentals - passing, shooting and dribbling.
- There are so many drills on youtube and google for basketball, pick the ones that you understand and work for your team.
- If they don’t work the first time you try the drills, try it again a couple of weeks later. Sometimes it can take a few times to get it right.Watch other coaches trainings and games to get new drills and different approaches to coaching.
Make the drills fun. Incorporating competitiveness will help.
Use playing a game at the end of training as a lure to get some drills done beforehand.
-
Get just your team together for a talk 5 minutes before warm up to get them engaged.
Warm up:
- You have 3 minutes of warm up time before tip off.
- Get your team to do some lay up drills to get them ready. Leave 30 seconds for a quick chat before tip off.5 players to start on the court and your subs (impact players) sit with you next to the scoring bench.
Talk to your players on the bench and on the court as much as you need to. Don’t be shy. Communication is so important in basketball and it normally starts with you.
Even court time, use your team manager to do subs they are a vital part of the team and its one less job for you.
Subs:
On any whistle ask the referee for a sub and the referee will let you know when players can swap over.Timeouts:
- Simply ask the referee or score bench for a time out, the referee will call time out at the next break in play get your players to have a seat and a drink.
- Talk about any problems that can be fixed and always end with something positive.
- You generally get 1 to 2 minutes so make your message short sharp and direct. No matter the result, get everyone in a group after the game. Talk about what you can work on at training and try to end up with hands in and something positive for everyone to leave on.
